Navasota ISD 2011-12 School Climate Survey to be Accessible Between Nov. 7 and Nov. 28

As part of a comprehensive communications plan designed to build relationships with parents, teachers, students, and members of the community, Navasota ISD is embarking on a systematic survey process through which it is seeking to provide school stakeholders consistent, continual opportunities to participate in school improvement processes.

Navasota ISD invites parents, teachers, students, and all other members of the community to complete the 2011-2012 climate survey beginning Nov. 7. The survey will be offered both online and in paper format. It will be open until Nov. 28. Those preferring the paper format will be able to pick up a survey from any one of the district's campuses or at the administration building beginning Nov. 7. Paper surveys will need to be turned in to campus offices no later than Monday, Nov. 28. Results will be posted in January, 2012.

The survey will address education-related issues in Navasota. The topics will include:

·    academic preparation
·    student support
·    school leadership
·    faculty relations and support
·    parent engagement
·    safety and behavior
·    school operations

Below are the results from the climate survey conducted in May and a calendar of planned surveys for this school year. Data collected through these surveys will be used in the school district's evaluation of its processes including decisions made regarding the implementation of the district's five-year strategic plan. The school district invites you to participate in the
education of our community's children in any way you can. Providing a high quality education for the students of today is among the most important ways to ensure a happy, prosperous tomorrow.

Board of Trustees Monthly Meeting Report

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the reappraisal of property damaged in a natural disaster area at its regular monthly meeting Oct. 24. Chief Appraiser Bill Sullivan from the Grimes County Appraisal District addressed the Board regarding its options with respect to the property damaged in the Dyer Mill and Tri-County fires this summer. Property tax code allows the governing body of a taxing unit located in an area declared to be a natural disaster area by the governor to authorize reappraisal of all property damaged in the disaster at its market value immediately after the disaster.

The meeting began with principals from each campus presenting their school improvement plans to the Board. The Superintendent's Report included the results of the Rattler Band's marching contests this month. Assistant Band Director
Assistant Band Director Daniel Siegert
Daniel Siegert presented the band's trophies from the Buccaneer Marching Festival in Brenham in which the band earned third place out of eight schools and this past weekend's UIL marching contest at the Richard E. Berry Educational Support Center in Cypress in which the band earned a Division I rating.

Student Food Critics Rate Cafeteria Food at Harris County Department of Education Expo

Students and parents from Navasota ISD, along with participants from 12 other area school districts, attended the Harris County Department of Education Food Commodity Processing Expo Oct. 10. Approximately 300 students taste-tested prospective cuisine for the school cafeterias. Choices reflect new legislation currently being shaped which focuses on increased fruit and vegetable consumption and decreased calories, sodium and fat. Participating school districts are members of HCDE's Gulf Coast Co-op Food Cooperative. The co-op allows its 116-member districts and private and charter schools the opportunity to purchase products collectively to have better buying power. About 47 companies that supply United States Department of Agriculture commodity-processed products are available for taste testing. Companies make products from USDA-approved meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, peanut butter and fruit to facilitate child nutrition programs in schools.

Carol M. White Physical Education Program:

Fitness for All Works to get Students Moving

Navasota ISD was awarded a Carol White Physical Education Program Grant in 2010 which has enabled the school district to institute "Fitness for All", a comprehensive program that gives students the tools, knowledge, and motivation to become physically fit and to make healthy choices throughout their lives.

The program addresses several issues in Navasota ISD's existing physical education and health classes as indicated by the School Health Index data. The SHI is a self-assessment and planning tool that schools can use to improve their health and safety policies and programs. By addressing these issues, students in Navasota ISD will also make gains toward mastering Texas state standards for physical development and health.

Navasota ISD has strived to ensure that its program activities are aligned with the Carol M. White Physical Education Program and also with First Lady Michelle Obama's national challenge, Let's Move, to confront childhood obesity. In such, the NISD program includes activities and support structures for (1) empowering parents; (2) improving access to healthy foods; (3) improving foods in schools; and (4) increasing physical activity.
