Navasota HS Senior Accepted to Harvard University

Senior Ramon Galvan has learned a great deal from his two-year process to figure out where he will go and what he will do when his time at Navasota High School is finished. While that process is not yet complete, the big picture is starting to come into focus. Galvan was both happy and relieved to find out last week that he has been accepted to Harvard University.

Galvan is among a number of NHS students who have received early acceptance notices including Aubrey Armstrong (Texas), Trevor Savensky (A&M), Kelsey Kehlenbeck (A&M), Austin Baumert (A&M), Colton Harris (A&M), Leece Uilkie (Texas), Anthony Wiley (SFA, A&M-Corpus Christi), and Karina Corona (SHSU).  READ FULL STORY

R.S.V.P. Parent Corner: Campus Connections

Debra Rios
RSVP Program Director

Parent Nights, Parenting Workshops, and Home Communication are some of the many successful events the R.S.V.P. Parent Coordinators have stayed busy with this semester. As the year goes on, we realize it is a large task to manage all of the requests sent to the parent coordinators for home visits. The Parent Coordinators will now have a designated individual called the "Campus Connection" in which all concerns will go through. The focus of the spring will be placed on curbing truancy through home visits and communication. The Parent Coordinators will also be available for students dealing with any disastrous unpredictable events. We hope our new system will help better serve everyone.

Closing the Gaps: NHS, Sam Houston State Host College Financial Aid Information Night

Navasota High School's FAFSA Night (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) was held Dec. 1. There was standing room only in the high school library as members of Sam Houston State University's Division of Enrollment Management department and NHS counselor Michelle Guthrie -in coordination with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and College for All Texans-presented information to high school students and parents about seeking financial aid for college through the federal government's student aid program.

One of the goals of the statewide Closing the Gaps initiative is to increase the overall Texas higher education participation rate by adding 630,000 more students by the year 2015. SHSU has aligned its enrollment goals to support this statewide initiative and, through the Go Kats Go Center, provides a setting in which parents and students can feel comfortable in asking questions and receiving help in the initial process of college preparation no matter the student's college of interest.

The Go Kats Go Center will return to Navasota High School March 1 (5-7:30 p.m.) to meet again with students and parents. For more information, contact Michelle Guthrie at Navasota High School (936-825-4250 or guthriem@navasotaisd.org).

Our goal is to keep you informed about what is happening on the campuses of Navasota ISD. Please submit ideas for coverage and help us share with students, teachers, and the greater community how the students of Navasota are learning, leading, and succeeding.

Sincerely,
