Board of Trustees Monthly Meeting Report
The school district hosted a reception for the Navasota ISD Board of Trustees prior to Tuesday's regular monthly meeting to celebrate School Board Recognition Month. Following the reception was this month's regular school board meeting at which Board of Trustee members were recognized by Superintendent Rory Gesch for their service to Navasota ISD. Next, Superintendent Gesch reported on the election of Ronnie Gonzalez, Director of Technology & Communications, to the Texas Computer Education Association Board of Directors. TCEA is the largest state organization devoted to the use of technology in education. As a board member, Gonzalez will have input regarding statewide technology initiatives including the integration of technology into schools.
OTHER NEWS:
- Director of Technology & Communications Ronnie Gonzalez reported to the Board on the status of the district's transition to a new voice-over IP phone system. The system was implemented in December. Gonzalez reported the new system, which puts phones in every classroom district-wide, is currently saving the school district more than $6,000 per month from the previous system and will save a total of more than $75,000 for the fiscal year.
- Director of Human Resources & Student Services Denise Morgan provided the Board with a report regarding the development of the 2012-2013 school district academic calendar. The district's site-based committee will consider options and make a recommendation for Board consideration in February.
- The Board approved the submission to the U.S. Department of Justice of a preclearance request to move the polling place for Precincts 4 and 14 from the Plantersville Fire Station to Todd Mission for the May 12, 2012 Navasota ISD Trustee election.

New State Assessment System Debuts This Spring
The state's new student testing program goes live this semester. The new program is called the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness or STAAR. It replaces the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). STAAR will be given to students in grades 3-8 and to students taking high school level courses in the four core subject areas of English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.
STAAR is a more rigorous testing program. It emphasizes "readiness" standards, which are the knowledge and skills that are considered most important for success in the grade or course subject that follows and for college and career readiness. STAAR exams will contain more test questions at most grade levels than did TAKS assessments. The high school assessments will move from grade-based tests to course-based exams. For the first time, the state's assessments will have a time limit. Students will have four hours to complete each exam.
NAVASOTA ISD STAAR/EOC PARENT QUESTION FORM (submit questions to the school district regarding STAAR/EOC's, and we will respond to you directly based on the latest information available from the Texas Education Agency)

R.S.V.P. Parent Corner: Campus Connections

Debra Rios
RSVP Program Director

Parent Nights, Parenting Workshops, and Home Communication are some of the many successful events the R.S.V.P. Parent Coordinators have stayed busy with this semester. As the year goes on, we realize it is a large task to manage all of the requests sent to the parent coordinators for home visits. The Parent Coordinators will now have a designated individual called the "Campus Connection" in which all concerns will go through. The focus of the spring will be placed on curbing truancy through home visits and communication. The Parent Coordinators will also be available for students dealing with any disastrous unpredictable events. We hope our new system will help better serve everyone.

The orange head block is an additional piece of equipment specifically for use when players are wearing helmets, such as football, baseball and softball. The immobilization board was donated by St. Joseph Emergency Medical Service to facilitate the transport of injured athletes.
