AP Stat Classes Launch Community Research Project
High School AP Statistics classes have launched a project designed to analyze the response of county officials and volunteer organizations to the victims of last summer's wildfires in Grimes County. The students are working to implement a four phase plan that includes selecting a sample from the population of affected residents; creating, piloting, and executing a survey to collect data; conducting a comparative analysis of the data; and reporting and publishing the results locally.
Statistics teacher Josh Wilkerson said the idea is for students to
integrate classroom knowledge with community service. A project related to last summer's wildfires was the overwhelming choice of students when he first proposed that community service be the theme of the class' spring project.

"The goal of this project is to give students hands-on experience with data collection, experimental design, and statistical analysis in the context of community service," Wilkerson said. "This project will offer students an excellent opportunity to gain familiarity with the vital role statistics plays in the organization and evaluation of local outreach programs."
Senior Leece Uilkie, who is serving as one of the project managers, said the AP Statistics students use statistical equations and interpretations to explore real-life situations on a daily basis. This project allows them to apply what they are learning to something they hope is useful to the community.
"We assume the project we chose will correctly utilize key statistical terms and the material we've been learning in class throughout the year," Uilkie said. "Also, we hope the results of this project will shine light on the tireless effort given by the community and county."

Second Graders participate in "Hard Hats for Little Heads" at Texas A&M McFerrin Athletic Center
Texas ENT and Allergy, Texas A&M Aggie Student-Athletes, and the Texas Medical Association sponsored "Hard Hats for Little Heads" this month, giving away helmets to second graders from area schools. Navasota ISD second graders participated for the second straight year and were among hundreds of Brazos Valley students who experienced fun activities and presentations made by Aggie Athletics, coaches, and local police departments.
The Texas Medical Association's "Hard Hats for Little Heads" program was created in 1994 to help reduce head injuries among Texas children. Head injuries, the most common cause of serious disability or death in bicycle crashes, can be reduced by as much as 85 percent with proper use of a helmet. TMA's "Hard Hats for Little Heads" encourages children and adults to wear a properly fitting helmet in all wheeled sports: bicycling, skateboarding, inline skating, and when riding a scooter.

Navasota ISD School Climate Survey Results
As part of a comprehensive communications plan designed to build relationships with parents, teachers, students, and members of the community, Navasota ISD is embarking on a systematic survey process through which it is seeking to provide school stakeholders consistent, continual opportunities to participate in school improvement processes. In November, Navasota ISD invited parents, staff, and students to complete a survey addressing the education climate. The survey topics included:
· academic preparation · student support · school leadership · faculty relations and support · parent engagement · safety and behavior · school operations Below are the results from the climate survey conducted in November and a calendar of planned surveys for this school year. Navasota ISD encourages you to review the results and, if you did not take this survey in November, consider participating in future surveys as the value of survey data increases as the number of participants increases. Data collected through these surveys will be used in the school district's evaluation of its processes including decisions made regarding the implementation of the district's five-year strategic plan. The school district invites you to participate in the education of this community's children in any way you can. Providing a high quality education for the students of today is among the most important ways to ensure a happy, prosperous tomorrow.
