Piece of Space History on Display at Navasota JH
Navasota ISD students have access to a piece of space exploration history with the district's acquisition of a small part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) shuttle program. The school district obtained one of 7,000 space shuttle heat shield tiles that NASA offered to schools and universities that want to share technology and a piece of space history with students.

The tiles are part of the space shuttle's thermal protection system which is the barrier that protects the shuttle orbiter from the heat and cold of space while in orbit as well as from extreme temperatures when the orbiters re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. Each tile was specifically designed to fit a particular part of each shuttle, so no two tiles are alike.

As the Space Shuttle Program has been retired, NASA was looking for ways to preserve the program's history and inspire the next generation of space explorers, scientists and engineers. The shuttle heat shield tile is displayed at Navasota Junior High School.
